Louise Freshman Brown
Louise grew up in the small city of Oneida, N.Y. Her mother was a professional artist specializing in portraits and frequently exhibiting at the area's museums. Both of her sisters studied art. "I am very lucky, I grew up in a household where the arts were a priority.
Freshman Brown has developed her own style she laughingly refers to as the "Louise Freshman Brown School of Fractured Space. This method references cubism and other art movements, and has made her instruction as sought-after as her art. She has been part of the UNF art department for 26 years. In 2005 she received the Outstanding Faculty Scholarship award and this year was named the UNF Distinguished Professor.
"If more people regarded the arts and women in the arts with a little more prestige, it would be better for all of us," Freshman Brown said. "The more I can do to show that we are strong and important in the arts, the better.”
